Gov Wike appoints Joseph Yobo as Senior Special Assistant on Sports Devt

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has appointed Former Super Eagles Captain, Joseph Yobo as Senior Special Assistant on Sports Development to the Governor.The governor has also appointed Mr Chibuzor Aholu as Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Financial Matters.
A statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media noted that both appointments take immediate effect.

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has directed that members of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, arrested in connection with the killing of policemen during a clash on Monday, be tried for murder.
At least five protesters were shot dead by soldiers near the Niger Bridge as the group held protests to mark the 49th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Biafra Republic.
Pro-Biafra activists attacked and killed two policemen and injured two others during the fracas.
The army said it arrested nine protesters and handed them over to the police.

President Muhammadu Buhari will this week make his first visit as president to Nigeria’s oil-producing south, which has been riven by an upsurge in violence from militants, his office said Tuesday. Attacks on pipelines and other infrastructure have cut Nigeria’s oil production to some 1.4 million barrels per day, exacerbating revenue shortfalls caused by the global slump in crude prices. But a media aide to Buhari said the president would travel to Ogoniland in Rivers state to flag off a long-awaited clean-up of the area, which has been affected by oil spills.

Ondo workers to begin indefinite strike tomorrow

Government workers in Ondo State will as from tomorrow begin an indefinite strike over non-payment of five months salaries.
According to a source from the labour union, workers are expected to stay away from work until the oustanding arrears are paid.

The trial of Lekan Shonde, the 51 year old dock worker standing trial for the murder of his wife of 8 years and mother of their two children (Ronke), which kicked off on Friday, May 20, at an Ebute Meta (Lagos) magistrate court is just beginning. The real case starts on June 24 (that is if the Director of Public Prosecutions in Lagos is ready to go on) at a High Court.

Buhari who promised to respect the separation of power entrenched in the constitution urged the lawmakers to give the bills accelerated consideration and passage as they approached the completion of one legislative year on June 9, 2016.

Ten Months Unpaid Salary: Local Government workers slump & die in Delta

Two local government’s staff in Delta State have allegedly slumped and died while on duty over tension from ten months unpaid salaries. Reports have it that the victims were staff of Ukwani local government area of the state.
It was gathered that one of the victims, a 52- year-old man came to work last week Thursday but could not go back as he was said to have collapsed in the office at about 12 noon and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but gave up the ghost after two hours.

The woman committed suicide by stabbing herself to death in a forest after learning of her status.
A release by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Enugu state police command, DSP Ebere Amaraizu said the woman allegedly tested positive to HIV after a test at a nearby hospital.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has dared the Federal Government to carry out the alleged plot of preventing him from travelling out of the country.
“Under the federal system of government, state governors are not appendages of the President and as a leading opposition figure in Nigeria, he cannot be cowed by President Mohammadu Buhari and his agents,” Mr. Fayose said via a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.

No fewer than seven persons have been confirmed dead following protest by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), in Asaba on Monday.

The Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in Delta, Charles Muka, who confirmed this in a statement, added that the police recorded two casualties.
He said in the statement that five members of MASSOB were killed by military officers who had confrontations with the group along the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba.

A fight broke out between policemen and some people suspected to be members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in Asaba on Monday. The incident occurred along Anwai Road in the city when MASSOB members were marching to demand for the independence of Biafra. Policemen and others injured in the fracas, were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

A source said, "The police used teargas on the MASSOB people as they were protesting along Anwai Road this morning, so the people got angry and attacked the policemen with knives and broken bottles. They caught one policeman, beat him up before stabbing him to death; it was a fierce confrontation as everyone ran in different directions," Okelue said.

Another clash occurred at the River Niger Bridge on the border between Delta and Anambra states when some MASSOB members tried to conduct a similar rally.

A police source told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that MASSOB members had attacked some policemen at the bridge head, overpowering two of them, before throwing them into the river.

"We have been able to retrieve one of them from the river. He was brought out in an unconscious mood and rushed to the hospital, however, the second victim is still missing," he said.

Spokesperson for the Police Command in Delta, Mr Charles Mouka, a Superintendent of Police, said the police were still monitoring the situation.
