Soldier kills policeman in Jos

One policeman was at weekend allegedly shot dead by soldiers at a military check point near Panshanu village along Bauchi-Jos road while three others sustained injuries.

Daily Sun learnt they were travelling from Taraba State to Kaduna State for an interview. Our correspondent learnt that the incident occurred when the policemen who were in mufti reportedly refused to stop their bus at the check point for security search by the military men on patrol.

This reportedly triggered the officers to open fire on them suspecting that they were terrorists.
The Assistant Director Army Public Relations (PRO) of the 33 artillery Brigade Bauchi, Major Joseph Adekunle Afolashade confirmed the incident.

Afolashade disclosed that the bus drove dangerously through the check point which aroused suspicion that it was carrying Boko Haram insurgents or some criminals.
He said that the army later carried out preliminary investigation that revealed that the victims were police men.
He said the situation has been brought under control and the road since opened for motorists.
The army spokesman urged members of general public to abide by rules at check point irrespective of their statuses to avoid recurrence of such incident in the future.

“The general public is also requested to note that the current situation in the country especially with the ongoing operation in North East to clear the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists from their hideouts, there is need to ensure no escaping terrorists or weapons are allowed to infiltrate other parts of the country,” he said.
