The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the League Management Company (LMC)and other ex-internationals as well as Nigerians on Wednesday paid tributes to Nigeria’s highest goal scorer Rashidi Yekini 4 years after his death.
In remembrance of the goal poacher, the NFF wrote via its twitter, “Our Legend Rashidi Yekini ( 3 Oct.1963 – 4 May 2012) Lives forever in the memories we keep. #WeRememberYekini”........More tweets from Nigerians after the cut.......
Mr. Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international, and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country’s first-ever goal in the ‘USA 94’ tournament.
The LMC also had this to say, “#WeRememberYekini as #NPFL oldest hattrick scorer at age 39. He netted 3 in Berger’s 3-1 win over Kwara Utd in 2003.
#WeRememberYekini, ex-@NGSuperEagles & Shooting Stars striker, who passed on 4 years ago”.
Also in remembrance of his death, his former teammates Garba Lawal and Tijjani Babangida say his memory lives on considering what he was able to achieve for the country during his playing days.
According to Lawal, “I had a special relationship with Abdulrasheed (Yekini) even during France 98 I was one of the very few people he normally call to his hotel room and we end chatting for hours. He’s not a very social person, sometimes he’ll be there and you’ll not even notice him but once in a while will crack jokes to make other players laugh.”
“He was with UNTL (United Nigeria Textile Limited team) from the 1983 and the gaffer who discovered him was the same person that found me and Tijjani Babangida, and we always maintained that relationship.” He said.
Also speaking, Babangida said, “He was a consummate professional, always serious with the job at hand and knows how to deliver, we pray to God to grant his soul eternal rest Ameen.”
Nigerians on micro blogging site, Twitter also paid tributes to Yekini.
