Also in remembrance of his death, his former teammates Garba Lawal and Tijjani Babangida say his memory lives on considering what he was able to achieve for the country during his playing days.
According to Lawal, “I had a special relationship with Abdulrasheed (Yekini) even during France 98 I was one of the very few people he normally call to his hotel room and we end chatting for hours. He’s not a very social person, sometimes he’ll be there and you’ll not even notice him but once in a while will crack jokes to make other players laugh.”
“He was with UNTL (United Nigeria Textile Limited team) from the 1983 and the gaffer who discovered him was the same person that found me and Tijjani Babangida, and we always maintained that relationship.” He said.
Also speaking, Babangida said, “He was a consummate professional, always serious with the job at hand and knows how to deliver, we pray to God to grant his soul eternal rest Ameen.”
Nigerians on micro blogging site, Twitter also paid tributes to Yekini.
