Breaking News: Security Agents Attack Governor Nyesom Wike’s Convoy In PH

The current crisis rocking the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Hacourt, the Rivers State capital, has taken a new twist as the convoy of the state governor, Nyesom Wike was attacked by security agents.

According to the official Twitter handle of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the security agents attacked the convoy of the governor while he was about to leave his official residence.

Reacting to the incident, the PDP wrote through its official Twitter handle @PdpNigeria: ” BREAKING NEWS!!! Security agents attack the convoy of Governor Nyesom Wike whilst trying to prevent him from leaving his official residence”.

Writing further, the opposition party accused the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) of being the brain behind the attack.

The opposition party wrote: ” BREAKING!!! Security agents use an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to smash into Gov Nyesom Wike’s convoy”.
In a related development, the Nigerian police Force (NPF) today, Wednesday, August 17, 2016,  sealed off the venue of the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Hacourt, Rivers State.

The development came barely 24hours after the Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi-led national working committee defiled court’s order to hold the convention today at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt.

It would be recalled that Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on Tuesday, stopped the convention pending the determination of an interlocutory application filed by factional leader of the PDP, Ali Modu-Sheriff.

Justice Abang had adjourned the hearing of the case till September 7, 2016, and also gave a stern warning to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu, not to send monitors to the convention.
But the PDP however defied the orders today as it went ahead with the National Convention, which prompted the Police to seal off the venue.

However, reacting to the development via its official Facebook page, the opposition party called on its supporters nationwide to remain calm as its leaders were already on top of the situation.
“We are witnessing huge presence of contingent of security agencies within and around the Sharks stadium, venue of our Repeat National Convention.

“Party leaders, our governors and other leaders of the Party are on top of the situation and have directed all members and other Party supporters nationwide to remain calm and await further instructions,” it said.
