The man who named his dog Buhari, Joachim Iroko, aka Joe, has spent two days in the Ibara Prison, Abeokuta, due to the inability of his family members to perfect his bail conditions.
The Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Prisons Service, Ogun State Command, Victor Oyeleke, confirmed this to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday.
He told PUNCH on the telephone around 6.44pm that the defendant’s family members had yet to perfect his bail conditions.
He said, “The man is still in Ibara Prison. His family members have yet to perfect his bail conditions. It is already late to do that today (Tuesday).”
Iroko, who had been formerly identified as Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, was arrested on Saturday, August 13, after one of his neighbours, Halilu Umar, a northerner, complained that he named a dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari.
The accused was arraigned on Monday for conduct likely to cause breach of the peace in a case with suit number MOT/617c/2016.
The Chief Magistrate, B. J. Ojikutu, admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum, adding that the sureties must be regular taxpayers in the state.
“Each of them must also attach four passport photographs to the bail bond, depose to affidavits of being gainfully employed, and they must reside in the court’s jurisdiction,” he had added.
The case was adjourned till September 19.
