According to ThisDay Live, the gunmen stormed the community very early yesterday morning, shooting sporadically and moving from house to house while targeting some community leaders whom they believed disclosed information about their whereabouts to the task force. A source explained that this attack is believed to be a reprisal attack.
The retaliation was launched after the gunmen successfully carried out earlier armed operations on the two communities. After the operation, the gunmen were said to have gone to a hotel, however, some community leaders provided information about their whereabouts to the security task force on oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the area. The task force allegedly killed two of the gunmen and arrested four others in a hotel in Elegbete.
After yesterday’s invasion, the two communities were left deserted, and this has compelled residents, students and public servants among others to stay at home. Schools, shops, markets and other business centres have also been indefinitely shut down since the incident. A resident stated that at least 20 persons, including community leaders, were killed in the calculated attack, adding that a detachment of soldiers has since been deployed to the two communities to restore public order.
The gunmen, who were said to have also invaded a school in Elegbete, reportedly allowed the children to go unhurt. “People have started to relocate to Agbede and Igbo-Olomu with their luggage” said a source.
The Lagos State Police Command is currently looking into the incident.
