With England failing to win, Wales took advantage to claim top spot in Group B. Gareth Bale scored his third goal of Euro 2016 and was superb, but there was much more to Wales’ win against a poor Russia side.
Wales advance from Group B as group winners, and on this evidence the rest of Euro 2016 will sit up and take notice.
This irresistible performance, in which they kept their foot on the gas from start to finish against an awful Russia side, was worthy of topping the quartet and their blend of energy and flair will have caused a few more-decorated brows to furrow. Wales hardly switched off at all in 90 minutes and Chris Coleman will now take his side to Paris for a last-16 tie whose possible opponents include Northern Ireland.
