Adele Hilariously Shoot Down Pregnancy and Super Bowl Rumors

After news of Adele’s concert banter spread, Pepsi and the NFL released the following joint statement: “The NFL and Pepsi are big fans of Adele. We have had conversations with several artists about the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. However, we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else. We are focused on putting together a fantastic show for Houston and we look forward to revealing that in good time.” A lack of a formal offer does not preclude the conversation Adele referred to during her Staples Center show.

The original post continues below.

Last week an intriguing rumor circualted that Adele might perform at the Super Bowl half-time show in 2017. While it was hard to argue with the The Sun’s NFL source who said “There is nobody bigger in the world than Adele right now and organisers are doing absolutely everything they can to try to persuade her to sign up,” many looked at the rumor askance. Not only was it very early to be talking 2017 half-time performers (the announcement usually comes in the fall), but—despite selling out arenas and stadiums across the nation this year—Adele doesn’t seem like the flashy, half-time show type. For example, it’s hard to envision her hiring a pair of sharks to dance behind her as she belts out a heartbreaking ballad. Adele, it turns out, agrees with the doubters. During a recent concert she confirmed that while, yes, she was asked to perform, she won’t be headed to Houston in February. Oh, and she’s not pregnant either, thank you very much.

“First of all, I’m not doing the Super Bowl,” Adele told the Staples Center crowd Saturday night. “I mean, come on, that show is not about music. And I don’t really — I can’t dance or anything like that. They were very kind, they did ask me, but I said no. Maybe next time for my next album because I’m going to do a dance album,” the singer joked with a mischievous flip of her hair. That “kind” offer from the NFL probably involved a very generous financial incentive. But Adele—who smashed all kinds of sales records with her album “25”—is hardly in need of cash. “I have no reason to be on tour,” she’s fond of saying during her 2016 concerts. “I came here to see you.”

As for the pregnancy rumors, Adele admitted that one of her favorite concert stances was to rest her hand on her belly. “I keep patting my stomach like I’m pregnant,” she said mugging for the audience. But she firmly put the idea that she had a second baby on the way to rest. Citing her packed touring schedule, Adele said, “I know I’m not Beyoncé, I’m not dancing or anything like that but it’s a bit grueling. I can’t be pregnant and travel this much.” Even without a dance component to her show, Adele physically trained in order to endure the rigors of a nine-month tour.
