Nigerian Doctor Stripped of License in the UK Over Fraud Charges; To Pay £75,000 or Face Prison

A Nigerian doctor, Anthony Madu is facing a two year prison sentence if he fails to pay the UK government the sum of £75,620.73 within six months, Daily Mail reports.

Madu resumed work as a gynaecologist at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, in August 2009. Months after, he got suspended over claims that he maltreated staff and that he falsified his training records. Those allegations were apparently cleared up and Madu proceeded on a paid leave, claiming he was stressed.

While on leave, Madu allegedly took up relief (locum) jobs in four other hospitals; precisely in Manchester, Yorkshire and the Midlands, and he was handsomely paid.

Not long after, Madu was busted and UK prosecutor Christian Jowett revealed to the court that the doctor transferred £95,000 to a bank account in Nigeria.

“He was legally obliged to tell his employers about his work but he did not,” Jowett said, adding, “He was also legally obliged to tell two locum agencies he was on extended leave and had been granted sickness leave. But he continued to work and receive payment.”

Afterwards, the 45-year-old Nigerian was convicted of six charges of fraud and given a two-year suspended sentence in 2014. Now he has been asked to pay the sum of £75,620.73  to the UK government within six months or go to prison.

Also, Madu has been stripped of his license and will never be able to practise medicine in the UK.
