The Voice singer Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes has been shot dead

AN AMERICAN singer who appeared on the Mexican version of The Voice in 2011 has died after he was shot in an ambush while celebrating his birthday with friends.

Alejandro ‘Jano’ Fuentes, 45, was shot in the head three times on Thursday when a someone approached the car he was in, and ordered him to get out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

Fuentes refused, the Chicago Tribune reported. The gunman then fired multiple shots, leaving the singer in critical condition. He died in hospital on Saturday.

Friend Miguel Sanchez told the Tribune he could not understand why anyone would want to harm the “one of a kind” musician, who he considered a mentor.

“That’s why it’s terrible for us, because he didn’t have any enemies, he didn’t have a problem with nobody. He was a gentleman,” Mr Sanchez said.

The attack happened less than a week after the killing of Christina Grimmie, who appeared on the United States version of the show and was farewelled in a heartfelt memorial service on Friday.

Authorities say a man shot her while she was signing autographs after a performance in Orlando, Florida. The man then killed himself.

Fuentes got into his car with friends and an armed man suddenly ordered Fuentes out of that vehicle and shot him.

Police said they had no suspects in the attack. WGN television said police were investigating whether the shooting was an attempted carjacking or a robbery.

Friends of Fuentes in Chicago said they were holding a vigil and memorial for the singer at his studio in Chicago on Saturday evening.
