We are tired of inconclusive elections – Senators tell INEC

Worried about the fate of the 2019 general elections and the spate of inconclusive elections across the country, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) to as a matter of urgency conclude any outstanding election in the country.
The Senate also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately nominate suitably qualified persons to fill the vacant positions at INEC, in line with the constitution to enhance the capacity of INEC to conduct conclusive elections.

Leading the debate on the motion, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu observed that over “20 States of the Federation have no Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC), contrary to section 14 (2) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 constitution (as amended )”.

Senator Ekweremadu also expressed concern that developments at few electoral exercises carried out so far by INEC has left much signals and symptoms that cannot just be dismissed.

On his part, Senator Eyinanya Abaribe (Abia South) was concerned that a particular senatorial district in Anambra state has not had a Senator for over one year now.

“For a long time now, the entire Rivers state has no representatives in the Senate. Who is giving INEC power? Where does it generate its powers from?, ” Senator Abaribe asked rhetorically.

While supporting the motion, Senate Leader, Aliyu Ndume said the motion was timely as it has become a popular discourse and issue of public opinion that the spate of inconclusive elections in Nigeria is killing the electoral system.

Senator Barnabas Gemade ( Benue North East ) while lending his voice to the debate, called on INEC to delineate additional constituencies to enable supressed constituencies have fair representations at the State Houses of Assembly and National Assembly.

The matter has been referred to the Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) for further deliberations and conduct of Public Hearing in date to be communicated.
