US Open 2016: Andy Murray roars into third round; Serena Williams

World number two Andy Murray beat Spain's Marcel Granollers at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the third round of the US Open.

The Briton, won 6-4 6-1 6-4 as a storm passed over New York, suspending play on the outside courts. With rain creating a ruckus under the new roof of the Arthur Ashe stadium, Murray battled through a tense first set, and eventually conquered the game.

"It's tough, you couldn't really hear the ball, which makes it tricky, but we're lucky to play under the roof because otherwise there'd be no tennis right now," said Murray.

By beating Granollers, Murray sets up a contest against Frenchman Gilles Simon or Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the last 32 on Saturday.

In the women’s draw, fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska shook off a slow start to reach the third round of the US Open on Thursday with a 7-6 (11/9), 6-3 victory over Britain's Naomi Broady.

The Polish who has never made it past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, next faces 25th seed Caroline Garcia of France, who won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Czech Katerina Siniakova.

Serena Williams’s inched one step closer to her quest of a seventh US Open title and 23rd Grand Slam crown as she defeated Vania King 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the third round.

The 34-year-old hit 19 winners in the first set as she dominated with her power, before cruising through the second. She will play Sweden's Johanna Larsson for a place in the last 16.
